Ordering Tips

5 Things to Check Before Ordering Bricks

Getting your brick order wrong is expensive and consequently delays your project significantly. Furthermore, matching bricks after the fact is often impossible. These are the checks carried out on every Signature Build project before a delivery is booked.

🎨

Same Batch

Always order all bricks from the same manufacturing batch number. Bricks from different batches vary in colour and texture — consequently, this becomes highly visible once built and is very difficult to remedy.

📦

Order Enough First Time

Getting a second delivery of matching bricks is often impossible because the exact batch may be sold out. Therefore, order 5–10% more than the calculator result to allow for future repairs, damaged bricks and cuts at corners.

🔍

Check on Delivery

Inspect every pallet on delivery before the truck leaves. Chipped, cracked or wrongly coloured bricks should be rejected immediately. However, returning damaged bricks after the driver leaves is significantly more difficult and time-consuming.

💧

Mortar Consistency

Mix mortar to a stiff, workable consistency. Furthermore, use the same sand-to-cement ratio throughout to ensure consistent joint colour. Never add extra water to stale or drying mortar — discard and mix a fresh batch instead.

🏗️

Match Existing Work

If repairing or extending existing brickwork, take a sample brick to your supplier before ordering. Furthermore, matching Victorian or Edwardian brickwork requires specialist sourcing — consequently, most standard merchants will not stock what you need.

📐

Reveals Add Waste

Window and door reveals require cut bricks that generate more waste than flat wall panels. Our 5% allowance covers standard work — however, add 8% if there are many openings or complex corner detailing.

Common Questions

Brick Calculator UK — FAQs

A standard UK brick (215 × 102.5 × 65mm) with a 10mm mortar joint requires 60 bricks per m² for a half-brick wall and 120 bricks per m² for a full-brick wall. Furthermore, lightweight concrete blocks (440 × 215mm face) use 10 blocks per m² regardless of thickness. Always add at least 5% for wastage — and consequently add more if there are many openings, corners or reveals.

Multiply wall length by wall height for gross area. Then deduct window openings (standard 1.2 × 1.0m = 1.2m²) and door openings (standard 0.9 × 2.1m = 1.89m²). Furthermore, multiply the net area by 60 (half-brick) or 120 (full-brick) and add 5% for wastage. However, our brick calculator UK does this automatically — consequently all you need to do is adjust the sliders and counter buttons above.

A half-brick wall is 102.5mm thick — one standard UK brick laid on its side in stretcher bond. It requires 60 bricks per m² and is therefore the most common wall type for garden walls, boundary walls, internal partitions and the outer leaf of a cavity wall. A full-brick wall, however, is 215mm thick and requires 120 bricks per m² — used where greater structural strength or sound insulation is needed.

For a standard half-brick wall you need approximately one 1-tonne bag of premixed mortar per 1,000 bricks, or around 42 bags of 25kg premixed mortar. Furthermore, our brick calculator automatically calculates mortar requirements in 25kg bags or bulk kilograms based on your selected wall type and net area — consequently you never need to work this out manually.

Yes — always order all bricks from the same manufacturing batch number. Even within the same product line, bricks fired in different batches can vary noticeably in colour and surface texture. This consequently becomes highly visible once built. Therefore, check the batch number on all pallets before accepting delivery and reject any that do not match the rest of your order.

A standard UK brick pallet typically contains 400 to 500 bricks depending on the manufacturer and brick type. Furthermore, facing bricks are often supplied in 400-brick pallets, which covers approximately 6.67m² of half-brick wall including wastage. Engineering bricks and dense blocks, however, are often on heavier pallets of 200–300 units. Therefore, always confirm pallet quantities with your supplier before calculating how many pallets to order.

About This Brick Calculator UK — 2026

Signature Build Properties maintains this brick calculator UK as a free tool for homeowners, self-builders and contractors planning brickwork across West London. Our team has over 15 years of brickwork experience across extensions, boundary walls, garden walls and new builds. As a result, the quantities in this calculator reflect real on-site material use — not theoretical values that ignore practical wastage.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator follows standard UK brick dimensions of 215 × 102.5 × 65mm as specified by BS EN 771-1, with a standard 10mm mortar joint. Furthermore, it covers half-brick walls (60 bricks/m²), full-brick walls (120 bricks/m²) and lightweight concrete blocks (10 blocks/m²). Window and door openings are automatically deducted from the gross area. Consequently, the result reflects the actual net wall area you need to build.

Wastage and Mortar

All results include a 5% wastage allowance, which covers normal breakages, cuts at corners and reveals, and minor over-ordering. However, if your wall has many openings, complex corners or you are matching existing brickwork that may have a high reject rate, add 8–10% instead. Furthermore, mortar quantities calculate automatically based on wall type and net area — in 25kg premixed bags or bulk kilograms.
